OUR HISTORY and MISSION
The Bergland/Matchwood Historical Society has been in existence for 34 years. August 1st 2009 we finally obtained a building for our Museum. We partnered with the Bergland Heritage and Cultural center and the Ottawa National Forest. This turned out to be a 4 win situation, with the biggest winners being the public.
Both Societies are located at the Bergland Ranger Station. The Museum is located in the old Ranger house and small garage. The Heritage and Cultural center having the Ranger office and the rest of the buildings. Even though we are partners and work with the BHCC, each society is separate. This creates a very satisfying working relationship for everyone. Both organizations work closely with the Ottawa National Forest.
Our mission is to preserve, document, and display every artifact of these two Townships we can. The items we have on display at the Museum are either donated or on loan to us. When family or old photos are brought in, people have the option of either donating or loaning the pictures. Or, letting us copy the original photo they bring in. We make excellent copies. We can also put your family photo album on a CD or DVD. This is a great way to prevent a family war after the head of the family passes. Just pass out copies of the photo albums.
Our gift shop is growing every day. The local author book is growing, as is the local craft and art portion. T-shirts, hats and coffee mugs, scented candles, and some very high quality jewelry are just a few more things we have to offer. Oh, did I mention, the coffee is always hot?
